Art Coaching for a Stronger and More Coherent Practice

An artistic practice develops through making, but also through choices: what to pursue, what to leave out, how to articulate the work and where to show it. Art coaching with Amber Grothe gives you a serious, supportive conversation about those choices without asking your practice to fit a single definition of success.

You can bring a new idea, work in progress, a portfolio, an application or a wider question about where your practice is going. Together we look for the thread that is already present and for the next action that can strengthen it.

When your work needs a critical companion

Working alone can make it difficult to see whether a problem belongs to the work, the way you frame it or the conditions around your practice. Feedback from friends may be encouraging but vague; institutional feedback may arrive too late or focus only on selection.

Art coaching creates time to examine the work on its own terms. Amber asks specific questions, reflects patterns and helps you distinguish between a useful doubt and an inherited expectation. The aim is neither approval nor a conventional critique. It is a clearer relationship to your decisions.

Questions you can bring

  • How can I develop this idea into a coherent body of work?
  • Which pieces belong in my portfolio, website or presentation?
  • How do I write about the work without flattening it?
  • What is the next useful experiment, material or collaboration?
  • How can I prepare an exhibition, residency or funding application?
  • How do I protect a sustainable practice alongside paid work and life?

From the work itself to its context

A session may begin with images, objects, sketches, text or a description of what you are making. We can trace recurring questions, test the relationship between form and intention, or identify where the work becomes most alive. We can then connect that insight to practical decisions about editing, documentation, sequencing, language or presentation.

If the question concerns an application, the focus is not on producing generic art language. We look for precise words, evidence and images that allow a reader to understand the necessity of the project. If the question concerns a portfolio, we consider rhythm and relationships between works as well as individual quality.

An artist working with complexity and participation

Amber holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from AKV St. Joost and a Master’s in Holistic Science from Schumacher College. Her own practice includes art, social design and facilitated processes. She has developed work through exhibitions, residencies, grants and collaborations, and has worked with TU Delft since 2021.

That experience makes room for practices that cross disciplines or do not fit neatly into a commercial category. It also brings attention to the social and ecological systems in which art is produced: who is involved, what the work changes and what conditions it needs.

Art coaching or creative coaching?

Choose art coaching when the central question concerns your artistic practice, work, portfolio, exhibition or professional development as an artist. Choose Creative Coaching when you mainly want help moving an idea forward, overcoming a block or creating a workable rhythm. For a broader personal transition, see Life Coach Rotterdam.

Who this is for

Art coaching is suitable for emerging and established artists, recent graduates and interdisciplinary makers. You can come at the beginning of a project or at a moment when the work needs editing and articulation. You do not need to perform certainty. Ambivalence and unfinished material are often the most useful place to start.

Sessions in Rotterdam or online

Bring physical work or documentation to a session in Rotterdam, or share images and documents in an online session. Amber is based at Coolhaven 558, 3024 AR Rotterdam. The format is one-to-one and adapted to the question you bring.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a portfolio review?

It can include a portfolio review, but the conversation goes further than selecting strong images. We connect presentation choices to the direction and values of your wider practice.

Can you help write an artist statement?

Yes. The process starts with close questions about the work, so the resulting language is specific and recognisably yours.

Do you represent artists or promise exhibition opportunities?

No. Art coaching strengthens your work and decisions; it is not representation and does not guarantee selection by galleries, funders or residencies.
